Tapolca Lake Cave Visitor Center
Introduction
Tapolca Lake Cave Visitor Centre, located 50 km from Veszprém, is one of Hungary's most unique natural attractions, where the underground world meets modern exhibition technology. Discovered in 1903, the cave has been one of the city's most popular tourist destinations ever since. Visitors can learn about karst regions through an interactive exhibition before hopping on a boat to explore the cave's crystal-clear water passages.
Ten rooms with special attractions guide visitors through the mysterious world of caves. Children can explore a crawl cave, while adults can test their sensory abilities with a 'stone touch' game. Paleogeographic paintings offer a glimpse of the bygone era's wildlife. With the help of stereoscopic photographs and films, visitors can embark on their own underground exploration. Karst water, nature's exotic artist, creates beautiful limestone formations. Starting with the towering karsts of southern China and passing through the realm of stalactites, we arrive at the fragile beauty of the crystal world of the Tapolca caves.
The exhibition entitled 'Wonderful Karst' presents geological processes with spectacular installations, a climbing wall, and playful elements. The visitor center is open all year round and offers an unforgettable experience for families, school groups, and nature lovers alike.
Location & Accessibility
It is easily accessible on foot from the city centre, near the Main Square and Malom Lake. If you're coming by car, you can use the car park on Kisfaludy Street, but it may be closed during events. If you're travelling by public transport, it's about a 15–20 minute walk from Tapolca train station.
While the visitor centre is wheelchair accessible, there are 73 steps leading down to the cave itself, meaning it cannot be visited by wheelchair users.
